Oreo cupcakes

A weekend for me means the excuse to try new recipes. If I try baking something new on a weekday I just get really frustrated if it goes wrong. At least on a weekend you can chuck away the ruining batch, tweak your recipe & try again.

Today I baked some Oreo cupcakes. Dead easy. Just use your favourite chocolate cupcake recipe, whip up some vanilla butter icing, break up some oreo cookies (try not to eat them all before this part. I nearly failed...) and then gently fold them into the butter icing mixture. Yummy. Goes perfectly with a nice cup of tea :)

I thought it would be nice to share a book that I'm reading - and absolutely loving - at the moment. If you like the whole 1930s/40s period then you have to get this book. Firstly, it's beautiful & as fickle as that sounds, a beautiful book is something to be treasured. The text is broken up with lots of images from books, architecture, paintings... It really brings the words to life. Secondly, it spans literature, architecture, art... So many topics & written about in such an accessible way.

I pretty much want to jump into Greta's home. I love everything about it - the colours, the fact that it is so homely & don't get me even started on that kitchen. That is the dream.

At the moment my brain's pretty much preoccupied about working with a friend on a new project. I'm excited but also a little nervous... It's always risky working with a friend, but we lived together for 2 years so at least we know each other inside out. It's a fun project though so once it gets going I'll be sure to let you know!

Reading... Auntie Mame: An Irreverant Escapade by Patrick Dennis. Such a fun book. A young boy goes to live with his lovely & incredibly eccentric Auntie Mame after his father passes away & it follows their relationship. I was immediately hooked. I challenge anyone to not want to be Auntie Mame after reading it.

Watching... 30 Rock, Season 2. How did I not discover this show earlier. Seriously, it is so good.

Wearing... thick, oversized, wollen jumpers, skinnies & my (badly worn) brogues. Yes, I am dressing like a 40 year old man (apart from the lipstick). But in my defence it is freeeezing!

Buying... pretty tumblers & bowls (mine are in a mustard yellow - my obsession with this colour continues) from Anthropologie & some animal print flats from Topshop

Eating... a lot of cake, especially these cupcakes & this Moroccan chicken dish. My Mum made it for us on Christmas Eve & I've been rustling it up on a weekend ever since. The only change to the recipe that I'd recommend is to just add the 1 tsp of cinnoman & 1 tbsp of the honey, otherwise it can be a little bit too sweet.

Listening to... Doncamatic, Gorillaz featuring Daley (what a voice) & rather randomly, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life by those Monty Python Boys.

Dreaming... of seeing Arcade Fire in Hyde Park this June (I must buy tickets) & of our trip to Monte Carlo to watch the tennis in April. So much to look forward to!

My favourite vanilla cupcake recipe

I'm a bit of a fuss pot when it comes to cupcakes. I can't stand inches of sickly sweet icing - it's way too overwhelming for me! I want a lot of sponge cake and a nice morish amount of buttercream icing sitting pretty on the top, yum!

So I've been trying a ton of recipes in my search for the perfect vanilla cupcake and this Primrose Bakery recipe has to be my favourite so far*. I saw online that some people have complained that the sponge is a bit too dense & I'd agree that in a Victoria sponge, it would probably be a little too heavy, but for me the slightly denser sponge works a treat with a small cupcake :)

If you give the recipe a go, do let me know what you think!

*Apologies for the Daily Mail link - it was the only place I could find the recipe online. I'm not a big fan of that paper!

Cheese & chilli biscuits

These were gone within a day. And there was about triple this amount. Yes, they were that good (or maybe we're just piggies when it comes to baked goods, hmm...)

I got this recipe from The Great British Book of Baking. I must say that every recipe I've tried from there so far has been absolutely delicious. The one adjustment I made was to up the amount of chilli in the biscuits as we do like our food hot in this house.

I was hoping the share the recipe here, as I rather naively thought that the recipe would be available publicly - sadly it's not - but the book is a good buy, promise! x

A quick & easy DIY idea...

I fell head over heels in love with this dress the minute I saw this photo on Lookbook, but sadly they no longer stock it. But it did give me an idea that it might make a fun DIY project! Hunt down a plain dress/sweater dress (I have a cotton H&M navy/grey one that would be perfect for this - it fits like a dream but is very plain, so it tends not to get a lot of wear), source a pretty white lace/crochet collar (there are some lovely ones here, here & here). You can then just attach the collar with a few hand stitches. Ta da, an affordable & personalised pretty dress - Louise x

1. Why did you create this blog? I'd always loved scrapbooking all the inspirational things I'd find & one day, after helping a friend set up a blog, I got nosey & started exploring the blogosphere. 1. Dolly Knits - Knitwear designer, Joanna, designs the most beautifully hand-knitted accessories. I'm in love with her pom pom hats!

2. Gooseberry Moon - Their stationery is designed and made in North Wales. They have a great range of cards, notebooks, gift tags, etc. I'll be buying that butterfly confetti for the next wedding I go to :)

3. Emma Lamb - I have loved her crochet for years! I intend to treat myself to one of her cushion covers one of these days... As a treat for ticking off one of my goals perhaps?!

visited Paris with my Mum & fell more head over heels in love with the place. Didn't think that was possible
finally went to Mildreds, the vegetarian restaurant in Soho that I was dying to try. It was amazing. We just ate starters & pudding. My favourites
got obsessed with Mad Men. Again
went to Winter Wonderland with Innu. Becoming our little annual Christmas tradition
got very excited that my best friend was pregnant*
gave into peer pressure & read "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" books. Didn't expect to like them. Did
got a new job with my boss of 4 years ago - & had such fun working with him again
went to All Star Lanes with the family for my birthday & realised that I am awful at bowling but love it anyway
hung out loads with the coolest kid ever, aka my nephew Joe
went to the wedding of one of my closest friends & saw her marrying the love of her life
saw Placebo at Brixton Academy. Only knew about 2 songs - but they were amazing live
decided to take my love of baking more seriously - exciting plans for 2011, hopefully with one of my good friends!
bought our first Christmas tree since moving in with the OH
discovered Indian restaurant Tayyabs. There's a reason why there are queues out of the door for that place. I'll be dragging the OH there in the NY

But although 2010 has been a pretty good year, I cannot wait for 2011. So many things I want to experience, places I want to explore, ambitions to be met!

Um, so although I was very inspired by the photos above, my creativity has been so far limited to buying some pretty Orla Kiely paper and yellow ribbon (see pic above). Creativity fail me thinks, but hey, I still have about 10 more presents to wrap. I can turn this thing around ;)

Hope you're all enjoying the run up to Christmas - and really hope you all manage to get home in time for Christmas Day. It's been horrible hearing of some people's travel nightmares.

And if the stress does get too much - I thoroughly recommend putting your feet up with a big mug of hot chocolate, a warm mince pie and cheesey Christmas movies. It works a treat for me - Louise x

Lemon meringue cupcakes

I was due to go to my friend's for a cute afternoon tea party but the snow was coming down so thick and fast that we decided to cancel. Which left me with 20 brownies and 10 lemon meringue cupcakes. I would have taken some photos of the brownies but, well, they were our lunch - but we did decide to leave the cupcakes for dessert tonight so here's a little peak at them.

They are ridiculously easy to make. The only tricky part (for me) is the icing. I'm not great at it. But they taste gooooood which of course is the main thing.

Here's the recipe if you fancy doing some baking this weekend. The only recommendation I do have is to wait for the cupcakes to completely cool before piping the meringue onto the top - Louise x

Dressing for the holidays

It has been so much fun having this week off. I bought our first tree since moving in with the OH, had my friend and her son over for an inpromtu snowflake party and have been catching up on a lot of reading in our local coffee shop. I feel so revitalised after this little break! Below is our little tree rather simply decorated - but I'm going to start a tradition of buying a new decoration each year so that we can build up a cute collection.

As regular readers of this blog will know, I took a little break from the blog earlier this year due to ill health which also rather painfully coincided with the OH losing his job. The OH has now found a new job which he loves and I'm on the mend and back in the workplace - which rather excitingly means that we can revisit our plans to do up the flat!

The first rooms to tackle have to be the kitchen and the bathroom. I've been saving any images that grab me for both rooms, but I thought I'd start by sharing the ones of my dream kitchen (kitchens have proved to be much more exciting than bathrooms!)

I am sooo pleased that leopard print is everywhere at the moment...
Jason Wu styles his pretty animal print dress with simple black courts and dark rimmed specs (secretary chic anyone?) and Meredith Melling Burke (from US Vogue) goes preppy with her print. Love.

And then Zara has made all my dreams come true by designing this gorgeous coat and skirt - and styling them beautifully with all black. Puuurfect.

I absolutely love this charming Swedish home. It looks so cosy with the fire, throws and the stacks of books and CDs. Perfect house tour for a chilly day.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. Me and the OH went out on Saturday to this really nice pub in Camberwell to celebrate a friend's new job. Never been there before, definitely worth a few drinks if you're in the area (and the food looked pretty great too). I was absolutely gutted to miss the Midcentury Modern show in nearby Dulwich (did any of you make it?) but did manage to get down to see my sister and her hubbie for a big Sunday pub lunch here. Another great pub I might add! This weekend was all about the pubs :)

Hello lovelies, I'm back from Manchester just in time to post my three favourites from the streetstyle blogs this week:

1) Sadly it is way too cold for bear legs here in London, but the minute spring comes around, I'm going to be referring to this picture for inspiration.

I love the mix of materials: the delicate, feminine dress juxtaposed with the heavier wool/tweed blazer and finished off with a pair of beautiful camel loafers. And I adore her hair colour (yes, I'm still very tempted to go red!)

2) I read somewhere that leopard print is now considered a neutral. Case in point above.

3) Who says brown is boring? Certainly not me...

What isn't to like about this apartment? The furniture lends it so much character. And I have real radiator envy (see top pic). *Oh dear, that really is a sign of impending middle age...*

I'm off to Manchester for the week ~~to shop~~ to work so blog posts will be few and far between I'm afraid. But I am going to try to schedule a few in (wish me luck with that!) so if all goes to plan, there won't be complete silence from me this week!

I’m loving the first lady’s beautiful deep red cardigan that she’s thrown over her shoulders. If I tried to recreate that, you can bet your bottom dollar that it would be slipping off my shoulders within 2 minutes! I guess some people are literally designed for fashion. And isn’t it lovely to see someone in colour. In autumn I quite miss the flashes of colour from the clothing that people wear in summer and spring.

Hope you all have an extra special weekend. What are your plans? I’m off to our local fireworks display tonight with the OH, hopefully with a nice big mug of tomato soup. I’m praying it doesn’t rain.

I especially love the first picture of the home office. I was reading an article in The Times magazine on Saturday about how Generation zero are embracing minimalism. I think it's a brilliant idea - and I'm definitely not one for avid consumerism, but I do need and love having beautiful, inspiring, colourful and useful things around me. For me, it makes a house a home. I guess that's why I love that home office so much. How inspiring would it be to have a little corner of your home like that to devote to your hobbies and passions?

I've only ever owned one Kate Moss piece - the pansy print dress which is now re-released as an iconic piece - and to be fair, I did love that dress. Sadly it didn't last a slight weight gain a few years ago (due to too many work trips to NY). The poor love tore under the pressure inflicted by my frequent diner visits and mexican take outs (completely worth it by the way...)

But since then, I haven't found anything that's really caught my eye... It's all been very pretty and I've seen many a girl looking stunning in the clothes, but I've found that in general the cut doesn't really flatter my shape (UK size 12).

Seeing as it's Kate Moss' last collection with Topshop, I really hoped to find something wow. Nothing has really blown me away, but I do like this embroidered tea dress...

I'm probably the most tempted by the ring, although £30 is pretty steep (but if it doesn't turn my finger greeen, £30 is fine and dandy).

1. This beautiful blue bike with wicker basket. I want one so badly.

2. This 'Sleepy Owlet' print by Lindsay Brakeen is just so cute. I have mentally saved a place for it at the top of our landing.

I've always tended to wear maxis in the summer - so easy to fling on with a pair of sandals and boom you're good to go.

B's Book Swap - 'Looking for Alaska'

I really did come up trumps in B's book swap. Krystal lent me John Green's 'Looking for Alaska'. I love my books and spend way too much of my time reading, so I was one very happy bunny that I'd been sent something I hadn't read - or heard of - before.

I was a little bit dubious after reading the back of the book. It's set in "Culver Creek Boarding School". I'm in my early 30s. I thought I'd had my fill of books set in schools but as tends to happen, I was way too quick to judge.

It was a brilliant read from start to finish. It's not often that a book hooks me in like that. Without wanting to give away too much of a book, I fell for our hero "Pudge" immediately, with his encyclopedic knowledge of famous last words and his bravery in shrugging off the known to go in search of "The Great Perhaps". The people he encounters at Culver Creek aren't your run of the mill teenage stereotypes, they are intriguingly mysterious and the dynamics of their friendship are quite beautifully portrayed.

I thoroughly recommend it - thank you Krystal for the great loan - and thank you B for coming up with the Book Swap!

Here are just a few of my favourite from the street style blogs that I regularly read. There is so much inspiration out there at the moment. But what does frustrate me a little - and maybe I'm looking in the wrong places - but where are the curvy girls on the street style blogs? The ones dressing cleverly to enhance, disguise, flatter... All the women here look amazing and there's no doubt about it, they have amaaazing figures, but I would love to see more representation of the average woman on the street... Do you agree or is this out there and I'm missing it?

I can't believe I've absent from my blog for so long! And thank you for all of your lovely comments, they meant so much.

To cut a long story short, I haven't been well recently so over the last few months I've been working part-time and have generally been trying to treat myself with a bit more TLC. More relaxing, more time with family and friends, taking things at a slower pace, and it seems to be working thank God! So now seems the perfect time to dip back into blogging. The odd post here and there. I reeeeally missed it. But I think I missed the connections that I've formed through my blog the most. Can't wait to catch up on my favourite blogs out there!

I wanted to quickly post about this beautiful Ollie & Nic Satchel. I'm officially in love. But I'm also officially saving up for a new bathroom (bah), so I thought I'd share instead of buy this lovely find.

Feeling so sapped of inspiration lately... I want to blog but I'm finding myself at a complete loss at what to write, it's so frustrating! You'd think that with spring blooming I'd be awash with inspiration!

Anyway, enough of my moaning, hope you all had a lovely Easter break. It was the first time that I spent Easter away from the family. My parents were in France and one of my sisters was living it up in New York (I was so jealous), but I managed to fill the long weekend with a lot of vintage shopping (we have so many cute vintage stores popping up around us, it's amazing!), baking Easter cupcakes, eating a TON of chocolate, catching up on movies we've been meaning to see for ages and going out for a huge Sunday roast at our local. Sooo relaxing.

I have such a thing for hot pink. About five years ago I tore out pictures of an amazing house that was all dark wood, white and fuschia which I still consider my idea of interior perfection. The boyfriend is letting me take the lead on doing up our flat (I cannot tell you how excited I am!) but I have a feeling he won't be welcoming pink into our home with open arms - however, maybe a small touch of fuschia would be ok? Maybe like this headboard? It's worth a try!

On a separate note, thank you all so much for your enquiries about my new job. It's going well - I'm definitely not the most ambitious person out there but I'm quite enjoying being back in work (did I just say that?) and the people are such a chilled out and fun bunch of people - and we all know that it's all about the people at work!

Beautifully white

My poor boyfriend has me nagging him to move out to the countryside. It's not that I don't love London. I really do, but whenever I head back to visit my parents and see the miles of green fields and open space I just feel more alive somehow. Sign of getting older maybe?!

What do you guys prefer - the city or the country?

I would love to live a cute cottage. I'm quite sure that there is no way I could keep such a white place clean (I've already managed to spill a cup of coffee on our new cream rug!) but this place really is so beautiful.

Hello my lovelies! Hope you had a fun weekend. Mine was veeeery relaxing. Lots of cooking, knitting (still haven't finished my scarf but I do want it to be extra long, so that's my excuse!), catching up with friends and watching good movies (The Devil Wears Prada for about the 100th time and Marathon Man - amazing film, can't believe I hadn't seen it before).

We were thinking of getting an inspiration board to put up over our desk, but I'm thinking that clipboards might be the way to go. They almost double as art.

What do you think? One big inspiration board or a collection of clipboards?
